Schools to wait for another three months as gov’t urges use of the oDel System

In a letter referenced to the initial communication released on the 21st of January, 2021, the Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) Prof. Mary J.N. Okwakol has carried forward a message advising schools to wait for another three months before they can resume normal operations.

This comes after being advised by the Minister of Education and Sports, who is also the First lady, Mrs Janet Museveni Kataha who put all activities related to the resumption of school programs on hold following a communication she received from the President’s office.

The communication prohibits the resumption of school programs following advice from the Presidential Scientific Advisory Committee that advised the need for schools to remain closed until the government finds a more lasting solution.

“The National Council for Higher Education is in receipt of a communication from the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports informing us that based on the advice from the Presidential Scientific Advisory Committee, the President has guided that all Higher Education Institutions should continue studying online using the oDel system for at least another three (3) months,” part of the statement reads.

The communication also advises the NCHE to at least continue with online classes until a decision is arrived at from the president.

NCHE emphasized the directive that no schools should be open as yet until a decision is made.

The information comes at a time when some Universities have already opened up while others were in the process.

Kyambogo University students have already reported to the campus and ready to start their semester, while others have already taken up internship positions as part of their continuous assessment.
