Bar Owners and Deejays in Uganda through their Night Life Industries Association have asked the Government of Uganda through the President’s office to allow bars to resume operations.
The bar owners also pledged to follow all the guidelines and Standard Operating procedures put in place by the Ministry of Health as a means to cut on the spread of the Coronavirus.
Bars, places of worship and other entertainment centers were first to be discontinued from operating in March this year when the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic was announced in the country.
However, much as some of the restrictions which were put in place during the time have been gradually eased bars remain among the areas that are still banned from operating.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Francis Ainomugisha, the secretary of the Night Life Industries Association said that its time for their places to be reopened.
“We can come up with masks that have a zip so that someone can drink, zip up and then speak without spitting saliva,” Ainomugisha said
Deejay Nimrod Nabeeta was also among those that voiced their opinion in regard to this matter and said can come up with disposable glasses that are dumped after usage as opposed to the usual glasses to control the spread of the virus.
He also said, they would make sure they avail enough space between their clientele.
“We can make sure that there is space between every client. We need to work,” Nimrod said.
Kenneth Kiyingi, owner of the Inbox Lounge in Nakulabye said that their bsinesses are gradually getting rundown yet most of the bar owners are still servicing loans from banks.
According to the Minister for Information and Communications Technology Judith Nabakooba, the national Covid-19 taskforce met with the President two weeks ago and discussed how institutions that are still closed can be opened up safely.
Nabakooba however noted that it is only President Museveni with the final say.
The President is expected to address the country about the Covid-19 situation on Sunday at 8pm.
