The woman member of Parliament for Tororo district has really done a lot this year to Police the country on issues to do with morality.
The latest on the list is that she has sought leave from Parliament to go and draft the Alcohol Control Bill 2022.
This is set to be discussed today Tuesday September 30th 2022 in the Parliamentary sitting.
According to statistics, alcohol is one of the most dangerous substances used globally.
It contributes to 5.3% of global deaths plus 5.1% to the global disease burden.
A 2020 study from the National School of Medicine indicated that Uganda has high rates of alcohol consumption.
About 9.5 litres is consumed by each person above 15 years of age in Uganda.
Such a bill was proposed by Hon Betty Nambooze who is the current woman MP of Mukono Municipality in 2016.
It however didn’t garner much support from her fellow MPs.
“The bill among others proposed that the sale or consumption of alcohol before 5 pm or after 1 am would become criminal in Uganda, and violators would face a Shs2m fine or a one-year jail term or both something that a number of parliamentarians were against.”
Meanwhile it should be recalled that Hon Opendi was key in seeing artists banned from performing in schools a few months ago. This is after she cited Sheebah’s ‘indecent’ dressing. And indeed singers were banned from holding performances in schools.
Further, she was the one who proposed the ban on the Nyege Nyege Festival which was effected by Parliament although the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja lifted the ban and the concert went on.
