Tensions Erupt in NUP as Bobi Wine Confronts Nakawa Mayor Over Alleged Secret Meeting With Gen. Saleh

Internal tensions have rocked the National Unity Platform (NUP) after reports emerged that Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe and his deputy, Mutoni Shiko—who is also the wife of singer Nubian Lee—were allegedly plotting a secret meeting with General Salim Saleh, a senior official in the State House.

Sources close to the party leadership reveal that Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, was deeply angered by the news. It’s alleged that Mayor Mugambe convinced Mutoni that collaborating with those in power was a necessary step to succeed in politics, and that their trip to meet Gen. Saleh in Gulu was to be kept entirely secret from NUP leadership.

However, the plan reportedly leaked, prompting Bobi Wine to summon Mutoni and her husband, Nubian Lee, to his residence in Magere for an urgent meeting. Present at the tense gathering were key party figures including Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi.

During the meeting, Mutoni allegedly distanced herself from the plot, claiming it was Mugambe’s idea and that she had intended to consult her husband before proceeding. Her response did little to calm Kyagulanyi, who reportedly banned her from participating in future political activities and advised her to focus on her family instead.

As for Mayor Mugambe, Bobi Wine reportedly issued a stern directive that he should not receive another party card under any circumstances. Initially, Godfrey Luyombya was being considered as Mugambe’s replacement, but further investigations revealed that he, too, may have been a mole within the party. As a result, Bobi Wine is said to have chosen his long-time ally Nubian Lee to run for Nakawa Mayor in the upcoming elections.

The shake-up didn’t end there. In response to Mugambe’s alleged betrayal, Kyagulanyi also instructed Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, Mugambe’s brother and current Nakawa East MP, to abandon his seat and instead run for Kampala Lord Mayor—despite the formidable challenge of unseating incumbent Erias Lukwago.

In Nakawa East, NUP deployed the party’s deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. However, reports suggest Balimwezo is covertly undermining him, refusing to accompany Mufumbiro during community visits and allegedly working against his campaign.

Trusted sources say Kyagulanyi is now spending heavily on intelligence to monitor suspected government collaborators within the party ranks, determined to root out those he believes are secretly aiding the regime.
