The Ugandan Parliament has released an official statement refuting an audio clip that has been circulating widely on various social media platforms. In this clip, an individual purported to be the Speaker, Hon Anita Among, is heard engaging in a phone conversation with an unidentified person, where she appears to criticize President Museveni.
This centers around Museveni’s recent apology, along with his wife, to the Buganda people for the injustices they have committed against the Baganda community throughout their 40-year rule. In the audio, Among expresses her dissatisfaction with Museveni, suggesting that he believes he has only wronged the Baganda.
She proceeds to detail several alleged atrocities committed by Museveni and his administration. She claims that while Museveni has apologized to the Baganda, he is also responsible for the incineration of a train filled with passengers in the Teso region and the orchestration of the murders of nearly 1,000 individuals in a swamp close to Soroti University. According to her, these actions were carried out by Museveni’s Banyarwanda supporters.
The clip has seemingly gained considerable traction, with many people convinced that the voice belongs to the Speaker. Additionally, the claims made in this audio are not new and have been circulating for many years.
However, Parliament has put a stop to the speculation by issuing a statement clearly declaring that the voice is not that of the Speaker and that the clip has been fabricated. Despite this, many individuals remain skeptical and are not easily convinced of the statement.
“We have been made aware of an audio clip circulating on social media, attributed to the Rt Hon. Speaker @AnitahAmong. The clip is fake and unfounded. We urge the public to disregard this fake content aimed to spread hate and misinformation.”
This is not the first instance of misinformation concerning Grace being extensively shared on social media and accepted by many. Nonetheless, Ugandans need to be aware of the consequences tied to spreading false information as outlined in the cyber laws.
