Meteorologists Warn Uganda of Prolonged high Temperatures as heat continues

Uganda is currently enduring an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above seasonal averages, meteorologists warn.

In Jinja, recent days have seen highs reaching 37°C (99°F), with forecasts predicting even hotter conditions in the coming week.

The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has issued warnings, urging citizens to prepare for prolonged elevated temperatures.

Since 2000, Uganda’s average temperatures have been steadily climbing, signaling a disturbing trend of extreme and persistent heat. Experts attribute this anomaly to a mix of global climate change and local environmental shifts, raising concerns about how long Ugandans will have to endure these punishing conditions.

In response to the escalating heat, UNMA advises the public to take preventive measures to mitigate heat-related health risks. Recommendations include staying hydrated, wearing lightweight clothing, and avoiding alcohol consumption. These precautions are deemed essential to offset the adverse effects of the scorching heat.

The current heatwave has also raised concerns about its impact on agriculture, infrastructure, and public health. Prolonged high temperatures can lead to crop damage, strain on water resources, and increased health issues such as heatstroke and dehydration. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are expected to provide further updates as conditions evolve.

Recently, Uganda most recently experienced a prolonged heatwave in early 2024, with many regions reporting unusually high temperatures despite the anticipated rainy season. The heatwave occurred during a time when rain was typically expected and left residents and authorities surprised.

High temperatures caused concerns about heat stress and potential impacts on agriculture.

Reports from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) weather unit indicated “warmer than usual conditions” across Uganda, a similar situation as is of today.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and stay informed through official channels to navigate the challenges posed by the extreme heat.
