Nambooze Hits Back: ‘I’m Not President, I’ll Stay as Long as Mukono Wants Me’”

Hon Betty Bakireke Nambooze has responded to those urging her to leave Parliament by stating that, unlike the Presidency, there are no term limits for her position. Nambooze made this remark after submitting her nomination papers at the National Unity Platform headquarters located in Makerere Kavule.

It is worth noting that Nambooze, a former teacher, entered Parliament through a by-election in 2010 and has since completed three consecutive full terms. She initially belonged to the Democratic Party before switching to the National Unity Platform ahead of the 2021 general elections.

She has been a strong critic of President Museveni for his prolonged tenure in power, yet she is now campaigning for a fourth consecutive term in Parliament. This has caused some to question why she is not making way for younger individuals to voice their positions in Mukono Municipality.

Nambooze argues that the residents of her Constituency continue to elect her back to Parliament, indicating they are not weary of her service. Additionally, she emphasized that there is no legal obligation preventing her from running for Parliament, unlike the restrictions placed on the Presidential office.

It becomes evident that many opposition figures who criticize Museveni for his lengthy rule also seem reluctant to relinquish their share of power, and most would likely hold onto it if given the opportunity.
