The family and close friends of Issa Ssekamanya are mourning after budding TikTok Content Creator tragically drowned in the River Nile during a recreational trip on December 1, 2024. The incident occurred at the Nile Resort in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, where Ssekamanya and a group of friends had traveled for a day of fun and relaxation.
According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded while the group was playing netball near the riverbank. A ball thrown in Ssekamanya’s direction veered into the river’s deeper section. Attempting to retrieve it, the young TikToker entered the water but was quickly overwhelmed by strong currents and drowned. Despite frantic efforts by his friends to rescue him, their attempts were unsuccessful.
Shockingly, the group reportedly returned to Kampala without immediately seeking help and only informed Ssekamanya’s family the following day. The family reported the incident to Njeru Police on December 2, prompting a search and rescue operation. Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson, SP Hellen Butoto, confirmed that the search for Ssekamanya’s body is ongoing, with efforts focusing on downstream areas near the Bujagali Hydro Power Dam due to the strong river currents.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including the group’s delayed report and the potential involvement of an unidentified individual. SP Butoto also issued a public warning, urging people to exercise caution when near water bodies and to adhere to safety guidelines.
This incident has highlighted the dangers of recreational activities near high-risk water bodies and the importance of prioritizing safety. Ssekamanya’s death serves as a somber reminder to the Ugandan entertainment community and beyond of the unpredictable dangers of nature.
