Makerere University’s Main Building to be demolished

The 81 year old iconic Makerere University main building, the Ivory tower that caught fire in 2020 is set to be demolished to pave way for the construction of a new one at the same site.

This building went ablaze on the 20th of November in 2020 and has since developed cracks according to a report from last year.

The historic building is unique and is the University’s most recognizable symbol and also keeps crucial records and documents that date way back in various offices.

According to the University, management has since handed over the site to contractors, Excel Construction Company for the new project that is to cost 20.5 billion shillings.

The University Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe says the building is expected to be completed before the University’s century celebration in August.

He adds that they awarded the contract to Excel Construction Company because out of the eight companies that applied, they emerged the best and their charges are affordable.

According to Nawangwe, Parliament approved a supplementary budget of 21 billion shillings for the Construction works and is now asking the Ministry of finance to release funds as soon as possible.
