Mukono Mucincipality MP Hon Betty Bakireke Nambooze has come out to reveal why Kayunga district is of much importance to the ruling government.
The district has become a battle ground for the NRM and NUP in the past few days as the struggle to clinch victory in the LC V by election goes on.
This saw President Museveni lace up his boots to go and campaign for Andrew Muwonge, the NRM flag bearer.
NUP’s leader Bobi Wine was placed and is still currently under house arrest as he was prevented to go and campaign for the party flag bearer Nakweede Harriet Kafeero.
Nambooze has however said that Kayunga is still a virgin land with many acres of free land.
She said that the district is one of those put in place to neutralize Buganda hence the desire to clinch it.
She however said that the NRM should know that the days of using intimidation in elections ended since people are so tired.
Addressing the chaos that happened yesterday which saw the NUP flag bearer sustain head injuries, Nambooze said that this is not new because she herself has gone through such violent scuffles on a number of occasions.
“Kayunga is very important to these people. They have miles and miles of land there. Kayunga is one of the districts put in place to neutralize Buganda.
NRM still thinks it can use intimidation in Kayunga. In Uganda, every election is a referendum. People will vote for Nakweede as an expression that they want change.
What has happened to Nakweede is not new. It is the order of the day. I went through the same thing in Mukono. I had my last rally, and Museveni announced he was coming, we were chased, and we made our rally in a banana plantation. We had more crowd,” Hon Nambooze said.
Nambooze also advised President Museveni to scrap the elections if he feels he can’t go to peaceful elections with the Opposition.
She also revealed that as NUP, they are carrying out ‘Operation Earthquake’ which requires them to use whatever is at their disposal.
Meanwhile Minister Haruna Kasolo said that President Museveni is a lenient leader in regards to Kyagulanyi wanting to hold the same rally as the NRM leader.
“President Museveni is a good and lenient President. That is why people get the guts to say if he is holding a rally there, they will also hold one there,” he said.
