2021/22 StarTimes UPL season in high gear after 119 days off

After a 119 day break that was initiated by an inevitable halt to all sporting activities in the country due to covid-19, the StarTimes Uganda Premier League returns with another, the 2021/22 season.

Express FC come into the new season as the defending Champions, having been declared champions by FUFA after the league failed to finish due to the Coronavirus pandemic that struck the whole nation.

Before the league was prematurely halted, Express were ahead of both URA and Vipers with already 26 games played by most sides. The Red Eagles will seek to defend their title and will host newly promoted Arua Hill SC at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wakulukuku on Friday evening.

Arua Hill were promoted to Uganda’s top tier after they finished the entire FUFA Big League season unbeaten, including a pulsating moment when they beat up on Tooro United in the FUFA Big League final in Njeru.

Express have maintained almost the core of players that helped them win the trophy last season and have only added experienced players Deus Bukenya and Nicholas Kasozi and Joel Mutakubwa to their squad to add competition to their squad.

But for Arua Hill, they have added more than 10  players to the squad that helped them gain promotion. Samuel Ssekamate, Rashid Toha, Joseph Vuni, Ivan Eyam among others with experience in playing in Uganda’s top tier have joined the Kongolo.

In terms of team news, Arua Hill will be without Rashid Toha who was ruled out of the game with an injury while Geoffrey Lwesibawa will miss out for Express FC.

This match will kick off at 3 pm on Friday, as opposed to last season’s 4 pm kick-off, and will be broadcast live on Sanyuka TV.

Apart from the Express’ game with Arua Hill, there will be two other games on Friday. Onduparaka will take on UPDF FC at the AbaBet Greenlight Stadium, Arua.

Both teams were so active in the transfer window, bringing in several players and will start this season with new coaches in their respective dugouts. George Lutalo will handle the Caterpillars while Brian Ssenyondo will be in charge of the Army side.

The other game of the day will be Mbarara City FC hosting Soltilo Bright Stars at the Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara. Another matchday 1 fixtures will be played on Sunday, 17th October.

StarTimes has pledged to televise more live games than the previous seasons to enable Ugandans to follow the action.
