MP Betty Nambooze goes personal with private medics over high fees

Mukono Municipality MP Hon Betty Nambooze is someone who is known for her bravery especially when it comes to airing out people’s troubles and what she feels is not right.

A few days ago, the legislator talked about the exorbitant fees especially consultation fees charged by the medics as the reason to why people are opting for self medication.

She therefore urged proprietors of private medical facilities especially in slums to reduce or remove the consultation fees.

According to Nambooze, most people go to the hospitals knowing their illnesses but then they are charged both consultation and treatment fees which discourages them and makes them to resort to home treatment.

However this didn’t go down well with some medics and they started sending her private messages showing their dissatisfaction with her submission.

In one of the private messages a one Dr Mirembe Joel told Hon Nambooze’s statement was a very misleading one although he appreciated her for always speaking for the voiceless.

Dr Joel said that the major role of consultation is to interact between the patient and doctor to understand the primary and secondary concerns of the patient.

It’s from these consultations that the medic determines the next course of action and it’s true that after consultation, the patient can be advised to go back home and change their behavior according to Dr Joel.

From this, the Dr then reminded the MP how they pocketed Shs 200M recently and questioned whether she’s the one going to pay for the consultation fees she’s discouraging.

“75% of our diagnosis is obtained at this stage.

So what do you mean when you say it’s for free….

Do you pay the bills for the people you want to offer free services?

You rich MPs just pocketed 200M of taxpayers money buying luxurious cars.” The seemingly angry doctor told the MP.

Miss Nambooze came out on her Facebook page to say that some of the doctors were cursing and had even threatened to deal with her even making the attacks personal.

She said that she won’t stop talking about it that consultation fees is one of the biggest problems causing self medication.

It’s the one that causes low income earners to diagnose and end up prescribing medicines for themselves.

Nambooze said that the country is losing many people because of self medication and something has to be done about it.

She therefore urged all medical practitioners and entrepreneurs to charge low fees.
